Encinitas coffee institution. Great pastries, strong coffee, surf crowd. Always has a line — that tells you everything.

1,000-acre ecological reserve with 7 miles of trails. Bird watching paradise — over 300 species recorded. Easy flat walks.

Tip: Start at the Nature Center on Manchester Ave. The Rios Ave trailhead is less crowded.

44-acre park with ocean views, dog park, playgrounds, and walking trails. The sunset from the hilltop is a local secret.

Tip: Great place for morning or evening walks. Bring the dog.

Now called San Diego Botanic Garden. 37 acres of incredible gardens. The bamboo grove and tropical rainforest sections are stunning.

Tip: Go on a Tuesday for half-price admission. The children's garden is magical for kids.

Founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937. The meditation gardens overlooking the ocean are one of the most peaceful places on earth. Free admission.

Tip: Go at sunset. No phones allowed in the gardens — which is the whole point.

Historic 1928 movie theater. Screens indie and classic films. Also hosts live music and community events. A true Encinitas landmark.

Working art studio where you watch resident artists create. Rotating exhibitions. Small but worth it.
